Gender- and diversity-sensitive language

Gender- and diversity-sensitive language recognises the diversity of people, treats them with respect, is sensitive to differences and promotes equal opportunities.
Linguistic Society of America

The gender- and diversity-sensitive use of language is crucial for raising awareness of diversity. Language, writing and images influence our perception and interpretation of reality and have an impact on our personal views and behaviour. In order to do this justice, Leibniz University Hannover has named the following standards:

Core standards
  • Terms and phrases that consciously or unconsciously devalue, intimidate, marginalise, insult or attack people or groups of people are not tolerated at Leibniz University Hannover.
  • Gender-neutral language, the use of both genders and the gender star (*) can be used to create gender-sensitive language.

The following pages provide information and offer helpful practical recommendations, examples and alternative wording suggestions for phrasing in a way that is as gender- and diversity-sensitive as possible in everyday university life. The current state of scientific knowledge and discourse is taken into account, reflecting current social developments and power relations.
